Global Warming - The Planet is Heating Up - Fast
Many of us believe we are on the threshold of a massive extinction event.

Imagine this scenario: One morning you wake up and when you try to brew a cup of coffee the coffee maker does not seem to want to start. Your gas stove won't turn on, you glance out the window and wonder why there is no newspaper. You pick up your cordless phone to call the newspaper and complain, but it doesn't turn on either. You begin to panic and you run out to the car. It won't start. "What's going on?" you think to yourself. "Why doesn't anything work?"

Does this sound like the beginning to some strange science fiction novel? Well, the scenario we just illustrated could be very real indeed. Together, fossil fuels coal, petroleum, natural gas, and their derivatives provide more than 85% of the energy used by mankind today. Unfortunately, the reserves of those fuels are not infinite. Scientists predict that within the next two centuries we will run out of those valuable energy sources. Clearly, something must be done. But what?

  PREHISTORIC ERA

Global warming started long before the "Industrial Revolution" and the invention of the internal combustion engine.

Global warming began 18,000 years ago as the earth started warming its way out of the Pleistocene Ice Age-- a time when much of North America, Europe, and Asia lay buried beneath great sheets of glacial ice.

Global warming during Earth's current interglacial warm period has greatly altered our environment and the distribution and diversity of all life.

More about the different methods of energy production that are in use or are being researched now. Will we turn more and more to hydroelectric power to serve our energy needs? Or will we perhaps someday discover the secret of fusion and thus be guaranteed a virtually inexhaustible energy source? Only time will tell. Lets educate ourselves about the energy crisis so that at least we will be informed. Perhaps someday, through the interactive game or the public message board, someone will come upon THE solution to our energy problems and prepare to learn why "Energy Matters."

Unfortunately, we tend to overestimate our actual impact on the planet. In this case the magnitude of the gas emissions involved, even by the most aggressive estimates of atmospheric warming by greenhouse gases, is inadequate to account for the magnitude of temperature increases. So what causes the up and down cycles of global climate change?

  CAUSES OF GLOBAL WARMING

Global warming is the result of a build up of greenhouse gases mainly carbon dioxide, but also methane, chloroflorocarbons and nitrous oxide in the atmosphere. Consensus has it that carbon dioxide contributes most to the changes in greenhouse gases, with production of carbon dioxide (CO2) increasing significantly since the industrial revolution. Other greenhouse gases include Nitrous Oxide, Methane, manmade CFCs and Ozone, the problem being that these gases can remain in the atmosphere for decades. Through the use of fossil fuels (coal, gas and oil) by heavy industry, and through usages such as human transport, etc emissions of all of these gases has increased. Deforestation is responsible for 25% of all carbon emissions entering the atmosphere, by the burning and cutting of about 34 million acres of trees each year. We are losing millions of acres of rainforests each year, The destroying of tropical forests alone is throwing hundreds of millions of tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere each year.

  EFFECTS OF GLOBAL WARMING

While many view the effects of global warming to be more substantial and more rapidly occurring than others do, the scientific consensus on climatic changes related to global warming is that the average temperature of the Earth has risen between 0.4 and 0.8 C over the past 100 years.

Clearly, global warming still involves many unknowns, but the remaining uncertainties in our scientific understanding no longer warrant a "wait and see" stance. Science tells us with increasing certainty that we are in for a serious long-term problem that will affect all of us.

some of the adverse impacts from global warming that they also predicted are starting to occur around the world, including:

  • Increasing incidence of droughts in some areas, flooding in others
  • Rising ocean temperatures and sea levels
  • Increased severe weather events such as tornadoes and hurricanes
  • Melting of glaciers and reduction in mountain snow cover
  • Dying coral reefs and
  • Coastal erosion, and the loss of coastal ecosystems
  • More heat waves and stronger storms will lead to more deaths
  • Changing ecosystems mean countless animal and plant species will become extinct

WHAT YOU CAN DO ABOUT GLOBAL WARMING

Environmental groups and government entities like the Environmental Protection Agency have been telling us for years about all the "simple" things we can do in our daily lives to save energy and cut pollution, including carbon dioxide emissions. But let’s face it: The global warming problem is too global for a few "simple" steps to solve it.

There’s no reason for despair, however. Controlling, if not completely solving, this problem is a goal we can reach. As one model, consider how, with great, focused effort over time, public health challenges that once seemed insurmountable—smallpox, cholera, polio, and more—have been surmounted.

Scientists are convinced that human actions are causing global warming. If this is so, it stands to reason that our own actions can also help reduce this threat.

  REMEDIAL ACTION

It is generally agreed that remedial action will involve energy conservation and efficiency, the saving and extension of the forest, and the promotion of alternatives to fossil fuels. What needs to be emphasised is that all these measures are urgently necessary regardless of any relevance to global warming.

Conservation And Efficiency

The chief danger at present, as regards global warming, is considered to be the build up in the atmosphere of carbon dioxide from the burning of fossil fuels and the destruction of the tropical forests.

Saving And Extending The Forests

Tragically, at present great areas of tropical forests are being destroyed by fire, bulldozing and chainsaws. Temperate forests are also being damaged, by industrial pollution. Stopping this is an essential priority, for forests are a major source of important materials, they perform vital functions, and their destruction adds to the build up of CO2 in the atmosphere.

Take Personal Action

Climate change may be a big problem, but there are many little things we can do to make a difference. If we try, most of us can do our part to reduce the amount of greenhouse gases that we put into the atmosphere. Many greenhouse gases come from things we do every day.

Driving a car or using electricity is not wrong. We just have to be smart about it. Some people use less energy by carpooling. For example, four people can ride together in one car instead of driving four cars to work.

You can reduce your personal contribution to global warming and set an example for others by using less gasoline, natural gas, oil, and electricity in your daily life. Your choices about energy and transportation are especially crucial.

Do It Yourself

Checking Engine Oil

Oil no matter how greasy and avoidable in real life is essential to the well being of your car. The secret to keeping your car in good running condition is by making sure your engine is full of clean oil. Waiting until you see a warning on the oil pressure light can cause severe, and often expensive damage to your engine. Make it a habit to check your oil when you visit the petrol station and definitely before a road trip. A couple of oil changes and you will eventually learn to estimate how often your engine needs a refill. Ordinarily oil should be changed every 4500 kilometers. The older your car the more often you need to check. Maintaining a record will also help you keep track of the oil level in your vehicle.

How To Check The Oil Yourself

  • Park on level ground and shut off the engine.
  • Open the hood locate the engine and find the metal loop sticking out of it at the end of a metal stalk. That s the end of your dipstick. If you can t find it your owner s manual should help.
  • With a rag or thick paper towel in one hand pull on the metal loop and remove the dipstick with the other. Wipe the straight end of the dipstick and push it back into the stalk you pulled it out of.
  • Wait a few seconds and pull out the dipstick again. Look at the end of the dipstick and notice where the oil ends. There are markings that indicate the parameters of where the oil should reach. If the oil doesn’t t reach inside the markings you need to add at least a quart of oil. It s also a good idea to look carefully at the oil on the dipstick. If it is grainy or has little nuggets or dirt in it it s time for an oil change. The oil should look smooth.
  • To add oil make sure the engine is off. Find the oil cap on the top of the engine and unscrew it. Pour the oil into the hole. A funnel might help but don t worry if you spill a bit of it on the engine.
  • Replace the oil cap and recheck the oil level like you did before.

Engine coolant

Low coolant level will cause engine overheating, which may cause seriouse damage to the engine.

How to check the engine coolant level:

The coolant level should be between "LOW" and "FULL" marks in the coolant overflow tank as in the picture. If it's lower, top it up. If there is no coolant in overflow tank or you have to top it up quite often, have your car inspected in the garage, possibly there is a coolant leak.

Never open the radiator or coolant overflow tank when the engine is hot!

When engine temperature is reduced (few minutes after the engine has been turned off) , simply add a coolant into the overflow tank to "FULL" mark.

Taking care of small concerns in time may save you a lot more

As soon as you feel there is something wrong with your car like any kind of irregular noise, vibration, shimmer, or you note some leak or any warning light comes on while driving or anything that seems to be irregular - have your car inspected at a dealer or a garage as soon as you can - it might be unsafe to drive. It's definitely better to check any small problem before it will cause something serious.

When Talking with Your Doctor

Research has shown that patients who have good relationships with their doctors tend to be more satisfied with their care-and to have better results. Here are some tips to help you and your doctor become partners in improving your health care.

Give Information. Don't Wait to Be Asked!

  • You know important things about your symptoms and your health history. Tell your doctor what you think he or she needs to know.
  • It is important to tell your doctor personal information-even if it makes you feel embarrassed or uncomfortable.
  • Bring a "health history" list with you, and keep it up to date. You might want to make a copy of the form for each member of your family.
  • Always bring any medicines you are taking, or a list of those medicines (include when and how often you take them) and what strength. Talk about any allergies or reactions you have had to your medicines.
  • Tell your doctor about any herbal products you use or alternative medicines or treatments you receive.
  • Bring other medical information, such as x-ray films, test results, and medical records.

Get Information

  • Ask questions. If you don't, your doctor may think you understand everything that was said.
  • Write down your questions before your visit. List the most important ones first to make sure they get asked and answered.
  • You might want to bring someone along to help you ask questions. This person can also help you understand and/or remember the answers.
  • Ask your doctor to draw pictures if that might help to explain something.
  • Take notes.
  • Some doctors do not mind if you bring a tape recorder to help you remember things. But always ask first.
  • Let your doctor know if you need more time. If there is not time that day, perhaps you can speak to a nurse or physician assistant on staff. Or, ask if you can call later to speak with someone.
  • Ask if your doctor has washed his or her hands before starting to examine you. Research shows that hand washing can prevent the spread of infections. If you're uncomfortable asking this question directly, you might ask, "I've noticed that some doctors and nurses wash their hands or wear gloves before touching people. Why is that?"

Take Information Home

  • Ask for written instructions.
  • Your doctor also may have brochures and audio tapes and videotapes that can help you. If not, ask how you can get such materials.

Once You Leave the Doctor's Office, Follow Up

  • If you have questions, call.
  • If your symptoms get worse, or if you have problems with your medicine, call.
  • If you had tests and do not hear from your doctor, call for your test results.
  • If your doctor said you need to have certain tests, make appointments at the lab or other offices to get them done.
  • If your doctor said you should see a specialist, make an appointment.

Loosing a mobile phone is not an uncommon thing for anyone in this world. You must have heard that your friend or any other person forget his or her phone in a hotel, car, garden, park. and when he or she goes to pick up phone, mobile phone was not there where he or she left it. Now what to do if your mobile phone is stolen.

Every mobile in this world has a unique code called as International mobile equipment identity (IMEI Number). This is a unique serial number of every mobile phone. If you provide this serial number to your network operator, they will deactivate your stolen mobile phone. No one can use your mobile phone even if the person who has stolen your mobile, insert new sim in the mobile. This mobile will be useless for all networks or service providers. All mobile network operators will deactivate or disable the phone by reference to the unique IMEI number of the mobile phone.

Now question is how to get this IMEI number? This number can normally be found under the battery of mobile phone (looking something like 004400/01/123456/7). You can also get this number from the phone software, by entering following useful code. Simply write down on your mobile phone following code.* # 0 6 # A 15 digit code will appear on the screen after pressing send button, or in some phones it comes automatically just by writing * # 0 6 #. So whenever you buy a mobile phone, get this code from the battery or simply write above code on your phone and get IMEI number.

After this record this 15 digit IMEI number and your phone number on your personal note book, place this book at a safe place and that’s it. Now suppose if you lost your phone, make a call to your service provider and give them your phone number and this particular key,i.e IMEI number. They will deactivate your stolen mobile phone. You probably won't get your phone back, but at least you know that whoever stole it can't use/sell it either. If everybody does this, there would be no point in people stealing mobile phones

So remember this simple code * # 0 6 #. Tell all your friends and colleagues to get IMEI number with the help of this code. If all of us simply follow this tip of making mobile secure, believe me no one will try to steal anyone's mobile phone.

BPCL has over the years, understood the need of its role in this ever sensitive ecological diversity for maintaining a balance.

With increasing concern on Global Warming, a strong Environment Management System helps BPCL follow and implement the various environmental projects in order to minimize refinery emissions, effluents and solid waste generation. BPCL operations involve stringent measures of control that prevent surface drain off from valve leaks and spills.

Some other initiatives undertaken by BPCL as an ongoing commitment towards concern for the environment include :

  • Lowering of green house gases has been a priority area that BPCL has worked upon with the commissioning of facilities such as - Diesel Hydro-desulphurization for production of 500 ppm sulphur diesel, High Efficiency Boilers to reduce fuel consumption thereby reducing source emission.
  • Alternate fuels like Ethanol blended petrol and Bio-Diesel which contribute to environment protection are being introduced in a phased manner: BPCL has identified around 2000 acres of land at existing Depots / Bottling Plants / Locations where Jatropha plantation is proposed.
  • BPCL has recently commissioned a new generation alternate energy resource in the form of a 5 KVA Solar-cum-wind power generator at Uluberia near Kolkata. Harnessing solar power for its power requirement is another area where the company is focusing on. A trial with a 5KVA solar power generator has begun at Bangalore.
  • Recognizing the fact that Natural gas, considered to be the fuel of the future is also eco friendly, BPCL has made important forays in marketing it to replace conventional liquid fuels. In the ‘Green Delhi’ pioneering effort the Company’s Joint Venture Indraprastha Gas has contributed significantly to reduce vehicular pollution by introducing CNG as an alternate fuel. Today the company has invested in six locations (Mumbai, Pune, Kanpur, Gandhinagar, Kochi & Bangalore), across the country where activities to introduce piped Gas are in full pace.
  • Educating one and all in the awareness of the catastrophe that is developing in the form of ‘Global warming’ has been another activity that BPCL has been silently carrying out. In the ‘Energising Environment’ section of its website – www.bharatpetroleum.in, BPCL has taken considerable steps in discussing the impact of nature and its importance to the human race. This section dedicated towards the cause of raising awareness towards protection of the environment.

  • Nisarg’ meaning mother earth is another of the company’s pet project. Green stretches in various parts of the country are maintained by planting and nurturing trees under the project.

  • The company also takes pride in maintaining eco balance in some form or the other in all parts of the country, whether be it a eco-park in kochi, an environment for butterflies in the ‘Butterfly park’ in Numaligarh, a ‘Rain water harvesting pond’ blanketed with lotus blooms in kochi or the nurturing of the eco –sensitive ‘mangroves’ around the Mumbai refinery. The proof in eating the pudding lies when naturalists explore these areas and commend us for the work done, and the fact that these have provided home for life in the form of vegetation, snakes, reptiles, animals and birds. However, the icing on the cake is when ‘Migratory Birds’ fly thousands of kilometers to make these places a haven for themselves.

We in BPCL, like the famous ‘Red-Indian’ Chief Seattle believe - ‘The earth does not belong to man, man belongs to the earth. All things are connected like the blood that unites us all. Man did not weave the web of life; he is merely a strand in it. Whatever he does to the web, he does to himself.

And all this stems from the philosophy we advocate -
“A Healthy environment, means a Healthy you”
