Kochi Refinery was commissioned in 1966 with crude oil processing capacity of 2.5 Million Metric Tons per Annum (MMTPA). Through progressive revamps and addition of process units, the refining capacity has been augmented to present level of 15.5 MMTPA.

The significant projects through which the Refinery has grown to the present level are the following:

  • Capacity enhancement from 2.5 MMTPA to 3.3 MMTPA in 1973
  • Capacity enhancement from 3.3 MMTPA to 4.5 MMTPA in 1984 with the addition of Fluidized catalytic cracking unit (FCCU)
  • Capacity expansion from 4.5 MMTPA to 7.5 MMTPA in 1994
  • Aromatic production facilities to make Benzene and Toluene in 1989
  • A 2 MMTPA Diesel Hydro Desulphurization (DHDS) plant in 2000 to reduce the sulphur content in Diesel
  • Capacity Expansion cum Modernisation Project to enhance refining capacity to 9.5 MMTPA and upgrade auto fuels to BS III/ IV standards, progressively commissioned during 2009-2011.
  • Integrated Refinery Expansion Project (IREP) to enhance refining capacity to 15.5 MMTPA and quality upgradation of auto fuels to BS IV/ VI standards in 2017.

A few of the unique features of recently executed IREP are the following:

  • Hydrogen Generation Unit on Build Own Operate (BOO) basis
  • Asia’s largest single mounded LPG storage facility
  • State of the art crude distillation and secondary processing units
  • Reverse Osmosis based De-Mineralised water (RO-DM) plant

As a testimony to its project execution competency, BPCL KR bagged the prestigious CIDC Viswakarma Award in two categories viz; 'Best Construction Project' and ‘Green Project Award’ during 2017.

  • Propylene Derivatives Petrochemical Project (PDPP)
The execution of Propylene Derivatives Petrochemical Project (PDPP) which marks the foray of BPCL into petrochemical sector is progressing fast. The project is also promoting ‘Make In India’. The feedstock for the project is approximately 250,000 MT per annum of Polymer Grade Propylene produced from the Petro FCCU and product portfolio covers niche petrochemicals viz; Acrylic Acid, Oxo Alcohols and Acrylates.
The project is scheduled for mechanical completion during 1st half of 2019.
  • Heat Traced Pipeline (HTPL)
The project is for laying a Heat Traced Pipeline and associated facilities connecting Kochi Refinery with Cochin Port for transporting high pour products in marine tankers.
The project is in the final stages of execution and the scheduled mechanical completion for the project is second half of 2018.
  • Motor Spirit Block Project (MSBP)
The MSBP is designed for production of 100% BS VI grade MS from the refinery in line with the directives from Government of India.
The construction activities are progressing and targeted mechanical completion for the project is 1st half of 2020.
