A 'niche' challenge dares startups in a unique way

The essence of the startup revolution is the dynamism with which new challenges are taken up and solutions developed for them. To tap even deeper into this vibrancy, BPCL launched an open innovation challenge – BPCL Startup Grand Slam Season #1 – in January 2020, as India's biggest grand challenge in terms of prize money on offer. Under this challenge, BPCL presented six of its business-related challenges into six problem statements and invited the Indian innovative startup community to offer cutting-edge solutions for each of these niche challenges. In return, apart from the lucrative prize, the winners got collaboration opportunities with BPCL. The six defined niche challenges spanned the domains of IoT, Analytics, AI-ML, Asset Performance Management, Mobility Solutions, Customer Engagement, CRM, etc.

As many as 329 entries were received online in Phase 1, and 25 startups were selected for finals by an expert evaluation panels consisting of internal and external members. Finalist startups pitched their ideas in a virtual grand finale. The six winners that emerged victorious in this battle of the wits have now begun working with BPCL business units to build proof of concept for their innovative solutions. Based on this enthralling response, BPCL is keen to host future seasons of the startup grand challenge on a regular basis.
