BPCL partnered with the 13th International Symposium on Fuels and Lubricants 2023, which was held from March 17-19, 2023 in Delhi, with the theme “Fuels & Lubricants as enablers for Net Zero Goal”. This symposium focused on the needs and solutions for Fuels and Lubricants as enablers towards meeting Net Zero goal. Special emphasis was given to energy efficient lubricants required for meeting emission regulations, energy & fuel efficiency, durability norms and environmental issues. In addition to the above, differentiated fuels and new excitements in additives for fuels and lubricants were also discussed.
Ten papers were submitted by specialists from Corporate R&D Team, Lubricants BU and Mumbai Refinery, while Debashis Ganguli, Chief General Manager (Lubes), BPCL and Dr T. Singh, Dy. General Manager, R&D chaired the sessions. Aniruddha Kulkarni, Manager (R&D), CRDC, Greater Noida received Best Paper Presentation Award for his technical paper “Promoting Clean Cooking Fuels in India – One Step towards Net Zero”, which covered the techno-commercial study of the various fuels used in India and the benefits Bharat Hi-Star stove brings in reducing the emissions.
More than 400 delegates participated in 15 Technical Sessions, 4 Plenary Sessions and 2 Panel Discussions.

On behalf of BPCL, Ashish Gupta, Dy. General Manager (HSSE), received the award from Shri M. Nagaraju, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Coal.
Water Stewardship
Refineries are among the major consumers of water that has both process and non-process origins, like cooling towers, steam system, etc. Mumbai Refinery requires 360 lit of water/ton of crude excluding sea water. Depending on the type of crude oil, composition of condensate and treatment processes, wastewater is generated from various processes is also recycled to a large extent.
Our Mumbai Refinery uses 14000 KL / day of fresh water , which is free of minerals and contaminants to avoid extensive damage to equipment’s. We make all efforts to manage and recycle various water streams to avoid using this valuable resource. Some of the highlights of water management at Mumbai Refinery are as follows –
+ Due to its proximity to Arabian Sea, 82 % (volume) of sea water is used in refinery operations to reduce freshwater consumption.
+ Along with RCF Mumbai refinery has set up Sewage treatment plan which process 22 MLD of Sewage Water and generates 15 MLD of Fresh water . Out of which BPCL consumes 6 MLD f treated water to reduce burden on BMC fresh water supply.
+ 53,000 kl (volume) water is collected every year, through rain harvesting
The above makes 90 % of Mumbai Refinery’s total water requirement, while balance is met through freshwater from BMC.
Our above efforts are equivalent to saving the freshwater for more than 50,000 people everyday. To further reduce our dependency on freshwater, we plan to double the rain harvest capacity in next one year.
Sustainability Performance Highlights
Bharat Petroleum has been among the first corporates in India that have announced their 'Net Zero' plans. Our ambition is to achieve 'Net Zero' in Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by the year 2040 to curb the carbon footprint of our operations. To realise this aspiration, we have articulated our renewable energy targets to reach 1 GW by 2025 and 10 GW by 2040. We also have taken several steps to make our operations sustainable –
+ More than 12,500 Fuel Stations shall be solarised by 2025, in our effort to make them carbon neutral.
+ Setting up 20 MW Green Hydrogen Electrolyser Plant in Bina Refinery, which will split water using electricity generated from renewable sources, to aid desulfurization of crude oil.
+ By March 2023, the entire nationwide marketing net-work will be Zero Waste to Land Fill certified, which means that no waste will end up in soil.
+ Have planted more than 8.5 lakhs trees, equivalent to 20,000 MTCo2e carbon sequestration, which will be scaled up to 1 Million trees by 2025.
+ More than 2,100 MT Plastic Waste has been disposed off under Extended producer Responsibility and have launched unique concept of using the plastic waste in building roads, where 250 tons of plastic has been so far been used, saving 750 MTCO2 emissions.

We are pleased to announce that 1.5 MMTPA Kero Hydro Treater Unit (KHT) project in Mumbai Refinery has received INDSTT Trenchless Excellence Awards 2022 for Best Project Management, Best Project and HSE , as well as the 13th CIDC Vishwakarma Award 2022.

The Kerosene Hydrotreater Unit is a catalytic chemical process unit used to remove sulphur from kerosene. The objective of Kerosene Hydrotreating is to upgrade raw kerosene distillate to produce specification products suitable for marketing as kerosene, Jet Fuel – which is used in aircrafts, Mineral Turpentine Oil and High-Speed Diesel. The first of its kind in India, KHT Unit facility has a capability to produce ultra-low Sulphur products making them more environment friendly.

For a sustainable carbon free tomorrow, BPCL has been supporting the growth of Electric Vehicles in the country by setting up Fast EV Charging infrastructure network at our Fuel Stations.
Today, to address the range anxiety of EV owners, we have launched Fast EV Charging Highway Corridor on the Delhi – Jalandhar National Highway, a segment of NH-44.
These charging stations are strategically located on the highway at 12 BPCL Fuel Stations, positioned for ease and stress-free journey of the travelers.
This is the fourth such highway corridor in the country, which has been developed by BPCL.

We hosted 23 large transporters, who uplift diesel from us for their fleet of trucks to our Mumbai Refinery for a guided tour.
These fleet owners had the opportunity to learn more about what it takes for our facilities to operate safely and reliably while also gaining a deeper understanding of how a refinery works.
Built in 1955, Mumbai Refinery is one of the most versatile refineries in India that excels in aspects such as quality, technology, human relations, safety and environmental friendliness.
With an annual installed capacity of 12 MMT, it offers a range of innovative and import substituting products, like 100N Group III Lube Oil, MAK Drillol, Lubes Catalyst, D80 Solvent; and Food & Pharma Grade Hexane, used in packaging. Center for High Technology, a dedicated technology cell of MOP&NG, has certified Mumbai Refinery as the second most efficient PSU refinery of the country.

The Propylene Derivative Petrochemical Complex, which was dedicated to the nation by Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on 14th February 2021, was built at the cost of Rs 6,000 crore. The complex has an Acrylic Acid Unit, Acrylates Unit & Oxo-Alcohol Unit of world scale size and capacity and will save approximately Rs 4,000 crore in foreign exchange due to import substitution.

BPCL winning streak in PSPB Games continue, as our Billiards & Snooker team lifted the Winner's Trophy at the 17th PSPB Inter Unit Championship 2021-22 yesterday.

BPCL was conferred with ‘The Sustainable Growing Corporate of the Year Award’ for taking major sustainable initiatives, among Indian energy companies, in FY 20-21, while R. Suresh, Manager, Advance Process Control & Optimisation, Mumbai Refinery, received ‘FIPI Young Achiever of the Year Award’ in Oil and Gas Industry for his all round achievements & competence at the FIPI Awards 2021 held at New Delhi on 26th November 2021.

The award ceremony was presided over by Shri Hardeep Singh Puri , Hon’ble Union Petroleum Minister along with Shri Rameshwar Teli, MoS, MoP&NG and Shri Tarun Kapoor, Secretary, MoP&NG.

BPCL is conferred the prestigious ‘Golden Peacock Innovative Product/Service Award 2021’ for the K Model product, a crude compatibility prediction and optimization software, developed by Corporate Research & Development Center, which enables refiners to arrive at an optimum compatible crude oil blend based on economics, availability and processing feasibility on a real-time basis.

The ‘NHRDN-Prof Ram Charan Young HR Icons Awards' is a multi-stage evaluation based competition conducted every year by National HRD Network. It comprises of a mix of online tests and in-person interactions, which assesses nominated Young HR Professionals on a comprehensive set of criteria & competencies that clearly differentiate superlative HR professionals. The 6th edition of the competition was recently concluded which witnessed around 230 individual participants from around 200 companies vying for the prestigious honour.

Out of these 230 participants only 8 of them could qualify for the National Finals which included two Young Officers from BPCL- Ms. Neha Gupta, Asst. Manager (Training) and Mr. Shivang Ganatra, Manager (HRD). The Final Level of the Competition involved a one-on-one interaction with select HR/Business leaders drawn from some of India’s best organisations.

It is a matter of great pride and delight for BPCL that Mr. Shivang Ganatra, Manager (HRD), was adjudged the 3rd runner up in the competition thus proving his mettle across multiple rounds of assessment and displaying the aptitude, attitude and skills critical to a budding HR leader. The award was presented to him at the recently held NHRDN 23rd National Conference (virtual) -the largest gathering of HR leaders and practitioners in India.

BPCL is the first company in the field of production of Certified Reference Material and Proficiency Test Services in India for the petroleum testing laboratories as per ISO 17034 & ISO 17043 through the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL).

Every year, NABL conducts the Annual Conclave for PT Providers & RM Producers in India to promote the awareness and maintenance of the Quality Standards at Laboratories as per ISO guidelines.

This year, the conclave was conducted online with a theme to enhance the capability of the Labs through the initiatives like Made in India & Atma Nirbhar Abhiyaan , where 148 participants from National & International laboratories of various field viz Petroleum, Petrochemicals, Plastics, Rubber, Polymer, Metallurgical, Pharma, Medical Diagnostic, Natural product, Govt Research Labs, Mints and Environmental laboratories participated.

The objectives and advantages of the conclave are:

• Recognition of competence of Laboratory by an Accreditation body in accordance with international criteria
• To enhance the scope of accreditation and to propagate the initiatives among SAARC, Middle East and African countries
• To enhance customer confidence and satisfaction
• To build a strong Quality Assurance System
• To establish the Indian brand of PT schemes / RM / CRMs in global market

Mr. Ramakrishna Sistla & Mr. Siddhartha Mitra from QA HQ represented BPCL in the national competition and made presentation on the uniqueness of BPCL PT & CRM, capabilities and future plans.

Out of 15 finalists BPCL team was adjudged and awarded with 3rd prize in the PT process presentation and Team Q&A is proud of this achievement.

GTU Project at Mumbai Refinery was recognized and awarded as the Best Construction Project from the prestigious Construction Industry Development Council (CIDC).

CIDC, is the apex organization, established by the Planning Commission, Govt. of India and Indian Construction Industry. The 'CIDC Vishwakarma Awards' are inspired by the spirit of construction and creation patronized by Lord Vishwakarma, the ruling deity of construction practices in India.

This event is hosted by CIDC for promoting best practices within the Indian Construction Industry.

Applications are shortlisted based on their conformity to the guidelines issued by CIDC and information furnished by nominees for specific categories. The recipients are finalized based on the scrutiny of the applications by the jury, interviews and site visits.

BPCL was chosen as a winner from many entries received by CIDC from various sectors of the industry like Roads & Highways, Bridges, Dams, Railways, Power, Transmission, Oil & Gas, Mining, Shipping & Port, Airport, Urban Infrastructure, Social Infrastructure, Buildings, etc.

The award was received by Shri. Naveen Chander K, General Manager (Refinery Projects Organization), on behalf of BPCL during the “Glittering function held at India Habitat Centre, New Delhi.” on 07th March 2021.

In this addition organizations which demonstrated excellent performance in the area of Corporate Governance, Sustainable Development performance and CSR activities were invited. Some of these companies who have taken positive steps to manage and measure their economic, environmental and social performance and have integrated sustainability into their core business models were felicitated. This also serves as a platform to highlight leading examples of sustainable practices and performance to inspire and motivate others to adopt similar policies and practices and transparently communicate on their performance.

Corporate HSSE and Corporate HR department applied for the above awards under the category of Sustainable Performance and CSR activities. Based on a stringent evaluation by the jury consisting of eminent personalities and the knowledge partner M/s. Ernst & Young, Bharat Petroleum was adjudged (first ) best in both the categories among the industries. On Behalf of Bharat Petroleum the award was received by Mr. R.P Singh ED (HSSE) Corp., Mr. Sanjeev Raina CGM (HSSE) Corp. and Mr. Ashish Gupta Chief Manager (HSSE) Corp. for Sustainable Performance and Mrs. Sangita V.Kelkar GM ( Admin and CSR) , Mr Devendra Joshi Chief Manager ( CSR) and Ms Leanne Fernandes Mgr. (CSR) for CSR activities.

Mr. R.P Singh also participated as one of the penal member for the topic of Building long-term Business Resilience and informed the esteemed gathering regarding various initiatives taken by BPCL under Sustainability and benchmarking of our Sustaianbility performance on Global Standards like CDP and DJSI. He further emphasized the importance of Triple bottom line and BPCL commitment towards Sustainable Development Goals. He also gave details of the our five focus areas under CSR activities and the initiatives taken by BPCL under each one i.e. Water, Health and Hygiene, Community Development, Education and Skill Development.

This is another feather in the cap of BPCL for this year and the efforts of Bharat Petroleum towards Sustainability, Community and Nation was acknowledged by the participants as informed by Mr. Ashish Gupta. Some of the photographs of the event are enclosed.
