FOLLOWING OUR PRIME MINISTER'S VISION
“A clean India would be the best tribute India could pay to Mahatma Gandhi on his 150 birth anniversary in 2019,” said our Hon. Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi as he launched the Swachh Bharat Mission at Rajpath in New Delhi on 2nd October 2014. The campaign aimed to achieve the vision of a ‘Clean India’ by 2nd October 2019. BPCL is dedicated and persistently working on the path of contributing to the vision of Clean India. The Corporation has actively participated in all the Swachhata Pakhwada’s through its extended family and has consistently been contributing to innovations and community led practices in the sanitation and waste management space. BPCL has also undertaken such initiatives that are sustainable, impactful and empowering to the people, the community and in turn the nation.
BPCL under the various Swachhta fortnights has actively participated and successfully concluded more than 80,000 activities since the first pakhwada. BPCL’s workforce, its extended family of dealers and distributors have come together and reached out to more than 10 lakh people. The activities included various Information, Education and Communication campaigns among the citizens across the nation. BPCL won the first place amongst Oil and Gas Companies for the Pakhwada in 2019.
The temple is located in Madurai, Tamil Nadu and BPCL has been instrumental in making many public utilities and facilities available for the pilgrims and tourists like E-Toilets, drinking water ATMs, e-vehicles for senior citizens and mobile hospital. To ensure city cleanliness and waste management, we have provided compactor bins and dustbins for waste segregation, sand-sweeping machines and compactor trucks. This iconic place has been consistently awarded by the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation for its stellar performance with BPCL support.
The Sri Adi Sankaracharya Janmasthan situated at Kalady Grama Panchayat in Ernakulam district-Kerala was allocated to BPCL for its maintenance and creating facilities for the pilgrims in May 2017. Under this initiative, the company is supporting activities like public sanitation facilities, clean drinking water, renovation of walkways and drainage facilities, sewage treatment plant among providing other public amenities.
To reduce and eliminate the practice of manual scavenging, BPCL has supported City Corporation for the procurement of 2 robotic manhole cleaning machines – “Bandicoot”. This is the sole technological solution for elimination of manual scavenging in the country. As a part of the on-boarding of existing sanitation workers, capacity building is carried out to upgrade their skills to operate this user-friendly robot and lead a safer, healthier life.
We have partnered with the City Corporation to set-up 33 micro composting units which have encouraged source segregation, reduced the burden on landfills and ensured recycling and composting of solid waste. The prepared compost is then sold by the workers for an additional income. The project has established a sustainable model for solid waste management and was awarded the Golden Peacock Award for CSR in January 2019.
BPCL has installed Reverse Osmosis (RO) plants for providing clean drinking water in schools, bus-stands and other public spaces. Along with the RO, water storage tanks were installed to ensure uninterrupted supply of clean drinking water to prevent spread of diseases due to contaminated water.
BPCL has constructed/ renovated more than 4300 sanitation units since 2014. These units have been of different types including community sanitation complexes, school sanitation blocks and individual household toilets. These projects also had elements of IEC (Information, Education and Communication) as a campaign to ensure awareness regarding the importance of proper hygiene and sanitation. In additional special initiatives, we have provided E-toilets, toilets for the disabled and mobile toilets at some strategic locations.
