Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) has a clear and inspiring vision for its Corporate Social Responsibility, and that is, “Be a Model Corporate Entity with Social Responsibility committed to energizing lives through Sustainable Development.” This philosophy guides every initiative BPCL undertakes, ensuring that its efforts create lasting value for communities and improve lives in numerous meaningful ways.
One such impactful initiative is BPCL’s project in Jhabua, Madhya Pradesh, which aimed to combat Sickle Cell Anemia, Anemia, and malnutrition among school-going adolescents. Jhabua is a predominantly tribal district that has been struggling with nutritional deficiencies and hereditary disorders that make timely intervention crucial.
The Challenge: A Silent Health Crisis in Schools
In January 2025, BPCL conducted a comprehensive pre-intervention need assessment across five government schools, covering 2,475 students from classes 9 to 12. The findings revealed serious health concerns:
These outcomes not only affected students’ physical growth but also their ability to concentrate, learn, and thrive academically. It was also evident that continuous counselling, soft-skills training, and improved dietary habits were necessary to sustain this behavioural change.
Strategic Intervention: Where Nutrition Meets Education
Staying true to its CSR vision, BPCL adopted a comprehensive and sustainable approach that addressed nutrition, hygiene, awareness, and lifestyle practices of the students of Jhabua.
A dedicated team of hygiene educators and a yoga instructor was assigned to all five schools, ensuring daily engagement with students. The creative and relatable methods encouraged the children to improve their routines towards healthy and mindful living.
Some unique initiatives included:
1. Millet-Based Nutritious Snacks
To improve iron and micronutrient intake, millet-based snacks were introduced twice a week for seven months. These included:
These snacks strengthened students’ dietary patterns sustainably.
2. “One Fruit a Day” Initiative
A simple yet effective habit. Students were encouraged to carry one fruit daily in their lunch boxes, ensuring natural vitamin intake and reducing dependency on junk food.
3. Controlled Consumption of Junk Food
Through awareness sessions and consistent monitoring, schools observed a steady decline in the consumption of packaged and unhealthy snacks.
4. School Hygiene Committees
Hygiene committees were created, comprising teachers, students, and parents. These committees played a key role in maintaining cleanliness, monitoring hygiene, and reinforcing positive health behaviours.
5. Soft-Skills & Behavioural Change Sessions
Beyond the physical, creative street theatre and school plays helped students practice and internalize healthy behaviors and positive lifestyle changes.
6. BALA (Building as Learning Aid) Initiative
School walls were transformed into colourful learning spaces featuring visual messages on health, hygiene, and nutrition that enable continuous reinforcement through daily visibility.
Remarkable Outcomes in Just 7 Months
The second round of blood tests was conducted in August 2025, reflecting remarkable improvements:
Percentage Improvements:
These results strongly indicate not only nutritional improvements but also meaningful shifts in daily habits, hygiene practices, and overall lifestyle awareness among students.
Why does this matter to BPCL?
This project exemplifies BPCL’s vision of sustainable and inclusive growth. By directly improving the health and capabilities of young people in underprivileged areas, BPCL is helping to build a stronger community and, ultimately, a stronger nation. BPCL's CSR focus on health and nutrition complements the broader commitment to education, skill development, and environmental sustainability.
As BPCL continues its CSR journey, the organisation remains dedicated to creating ripples of positive change, energizing lives, empowering communities, and staying true to its vision of being a model corporate entity.
BPCL’s efforts in Jhabua show how effectively executed corporate responsibility programs become a catalyst for health, hope, and happiness in the lives of thousands.
